Watercolor Workshop
Conducted by Guest Artist Lynn Ferris
June 13 - 14, 2009
Guest watercolor artist Lynn Ferris of Berkeley Springs, W.Va, visited the Lost River Artisans Cooperative to conduct a two-day watercolor workshop. Lessons during the sessions included color mixing, glazing, value assessment, and negative-space painting, culminating in a demonstration and lesson in painting architectural elements with an emphasis on creating dramatic light and shadow. |

Class consisted of discussions about specific painting elements and methods, followed by demonstrations by Lynn (center), and opportunities for the class participants to try out the techniques. In this demonstration, Lynn demonstrates a negative-space painting exercise.

In another demonstration, Lynn mixes pigments on her paper, creating soft variations and interest within a striking background wash.

Sharon Bungard works on a painting of a house, concentrating on capturing strong shadow elements in a method that defines the structure's form.
Julia Jones works on a class lesson on creating light and shadow.
Marion Marshall concentrates on a painting that creates depth through layers of negative space. |

Judi DeWitt creates a series of color variations within shadowed areas.

Here is a closer view of Judi's painting, which uses the shape of shadows to define the intricate details of a Victorian house. The shadow areas are created using a blend of pigments, mostly Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue, and Cadmium Yellow, to create interesting color variations.
Pamela Mittelstadt creates a painting using Lynn's shadow-and-light methodology.
After wetting her paper, Bridget DeRonda places soft washes into her painting.

Lynn demonstrates her technique of mingling pigments into wet areas as a way to create dramatic shadows.

Lynn dries her shadow demonstration painting with a hairdryer before proceeding to the next layer of paint. The mix of pigments creates a fantasic display of colors, energizing the rigid geometric shapes that form this house.

Lynn goes over one of her techniques with Bridget. A mix of wonderful lessons, painting demonstrations, plenty of hands-on practice, and individual attention made the workshop a success. Several of the students asked Lynn if she would consider a return visit to LRAC because they so enjoyed the sessions. Great class, Lynn!
