The Lost River Educational Foundation, which operates the Lost River Museum, has prepared a slate of 2010 classes and events in cooperation with the Lost River Artisans Cooperative. Students are encouraged to register early to ensure a place in the class as some classes have limited availability. A full payment is required at the time of registration.

The Essentials of Knitting

Saturday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Learn about yarn differences, yarn weight classifications and how to choose yarns. Also, learn how to cast on and bind off, practice the knit stitch and the purl stitch, and understand how to read knitting patterns in this basic, hands-on class. Students will design and knit a scarf.

Instructor: Judy Moyer
Cost: $38 per student
Minimum: 8 students
Maximum: 10 students
Knitting supplies are included. Assorted yarns are available for each student and knitting needles are provided for the class.

East Hardy Early Middle School Museum Field Trip

Friday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Lost River Museum & Lost River General Store

East Hardy Early Middle School second-graders will join Lost River Museum staff and volunteers for an interactive tour of the Lost River Museum and learn about the Lost River Valley, Hardy County, and Appalachian history. After a bag lunch on the grounds, students will walk to the 112-year-old Lost River General Store to learn some more Hardy County history - and enjoy an ice cream cone!

Design an Eclectic Birdhouse

Saturday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students will choose precut pieces to design and create an eclectic birdhouse for their favorite, feathered friends. Discussions on construction, basic woodworking techniques, and design concepts will be covered - all while assembling a work of art!

Bring found objects such as bottle caps, church keys, spigots, license plates, forks, jewelry or any items that can be used to decorate and make your birdhouse one of a kind! (Hint: a "found object" excludes merchandise in retail stores.)

Cost: $48 per student
Minimum: 8 adult students

Wood supplies are included; students are encouraged to bring cordless drills/screwdrivers, hammers, tape measures, pencils and their imagination.

Lost River Artisans Memorial Day Weekend Crafts Gala

Saturday and Sunday, May 29-30
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sheep will be sheared and wool will be spun, as spinners, weavers, painters, artists and craftsmen demonstrate throughout the day at the Lost River Museum and Lost River Artisans Cooperative. Come help us celebrate our 22nd Anniversary!

LRA Annual Memorial Day Children's Art Tent
Saturday, May 22 11:00am to 2:00pm
Create Green Crafts with Recycled Materials

Children's Bug Mobile
Ages: 6 and up (with parental participation)
Learn about the Appalachian Brown Moth, Honey Bee or a Fishing Spider while creating them out of recycled materials. Students will use recycled egg cartons, patterned paper, acrylic paints, little rocks, pipe cleaners, string and other materials to make their masterpieces and then create a Bug Mobile to decorate their favorite space.

Children's Hands-On Thankful Wreath
Ages: 6 and up (with parental participation)
Children will magically use their own hands to create a "thankful for" wreath by tracing their hands' shape to make a pattern, use the pattern to cut out many copies in different colors, write "I am thankful for...." messages on some of the cut-outs, and then glue and arrange them to make a wreath to hang on their door.

Basket Weaving -- Heart Basket

Saturday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Explore the world of reeds and learn basket-weaving skills while creating a heart basket in which to carry your heart - or to display on the wall. Students will weave with natural and dyed reeds and learn basic weaving skills, including twining, splicing reeds together and finishing the basket with a flat, oval rim

Basket Weaving -- Pie Basket

Sunday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Carry your favorite pie to your next party in a basket that's all your own!! Learn about different kinds of reeds, as well as measuring, soaking, splicing, and weaving techniques while creating a masterpiece. Bring your favorite pie recipe to share.

The Camera & Photography

Saturday, July 17
Session 1 -- 10 a.m. to noon
Session 2 -- 1 to 3 p.m.

Photographer Albert Mach will touch on the history of photography with historic cameras and discuss the advancements that have been made in camera design over the past 100 years.

Students will explore and gain technical and artistic knowledge of how shutter speeds and apertures, varying lens, ISO speed adjustments, white balance, printing method and different types of cameras contribute to the finished photograph.

The framing of a photograph will also be covered.

Mosaic Tile Workshop

Saturday, July 17 & Sunday, July 18
Saturday 10 a.m. to noon
Sunday 1 to 3 p.m.

Learn basic mosaic techniques for working with glass on a glass base. Students will create a window art piece in a design of their choice in this two-day workshop. Several methods for cutting glass, preferable glues for working with glass on glass, basic mosaic design techniques, and grouting will all be covered. A two-day session, Saturday and Sunday, is required to allow drying time prior to grouting.

Wooden frame, plate glass base, stained glass, glue, and use of tools are all provided.

Juanita Canzoneri has been teaching the art of mosaics since 2002. She has curated mosaic art shows and is the newsletter editor for the Glass Artists of the Pikes Peak Region (GAPPR). She lives with her husband in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Natural Dyeing Workshop

Saturday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Travel to River Farm Studios in Timberville, Va., to discover and create with Nature's color sources as Priscilla Blosser-Rainey offers her extensive expertise and knowledge of plant and natural dyes.
In this hands-on workshop, students will use August flora to test and dye wools, hand-spun fibers, and create recipes produced with alum and tartaric acid.

Create a color palette using goldenrod, zinnias, marigolds, onion skins or black walnuts to produce lightfast and washfast oranges, yellows and browns with a range of values and intensities.

Students will learn to prepare the dyes, mordant, dye protein fiber and experiment with color using postmordant baths, afterbaths and exhaust baths and the value of keeping explicit notes.

A Weekend of Nature & Landscape Photography with Frank Ceravalo

Friday, Aug. 20 from 7to 8 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join renowned West Virginia photographer Frank Ceravalo in this weekend-long, hands-on journey into the world of nature and landscape photography.

In this class, students will gain technical knowledge of digital photography, kinds of cameras, mega pixels, white balancing, RAW file formats, functions of differing lens, organizing and storing files, and adjusting images in programs such as Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom.

Thorough discussions will be held on photographic composition, design and light, comparisons of 35mm and digital work, times of day to shoot, and composing the photograph through the camera lens and on the computer. Field work will also be involved in the class.

Cost: $110 per student
Minimum: 6 students
Maximum: 12 students
Supplies: Students must have their own digital camera and comfortable clothes and shoes for field work.

Originally a chemical engineer, Frank's work echoes his understanding of detail, design, and composition which contributes to the depth and breadth of his photographs. Frank's photographs have appeared in Wonderful West Virginia, Blue Ridge Country, West Virginia Outdoors and National Geographic Adventure magazines. He has had solo exhibitions at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Maryland, had his work accepted into the 2007 Bi-Annual West Virginia Juried Artists Exhibition and his work is featured in galleries in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia.
